A good local newsletter issue usually comes down to balance. A few meaningful stories, a few fun distractions, and at least one place you immediately text to someone with “we should try this.” If you are looking for something a bit more low key, we found a charming little boutique that is perfect for gift hunting without the mall crowds.

We also have an update on the newest member of the Sheriff’s Office, a yellow Lab named Leo who is already hard at work. Whether you are running a 5K or just looking for a solid burger, we have you covered in this issue.

West Park High Staff Save Student's Life

The Gist: West Park High School sophomore Mark Moon, 16, is back in class after staff jumped into action when he went into sudden cardiac arrest during band on April 10. School nurse Jennifer Bair started chest compressions, an AED delivered a life-saving shock, and EMS took it from there.
Why It Matters: Eight Roseville Joint Union High School District staff members were just honored at Tuesday's board meeting, a reminder that trained employees and on-campus AEDs can mean the difference between tragedy and a kid going home.
New Explosives Detection K-9 Joins Placer County Sheriff

The Gist: Meet Leo, a 14-month-old yellow Lab who just completed explosives detection training and is officially on duty with Deputy Nielsen at the Placer County Sheriff's Office. The team will help with suspicious packages, bomb threat investigations, and security at major venues like Levi's Stadium.
Why It Matters: Leo isn't just working cases. He'll also show up at community events around Placer County, giving residents a chance to meet the team and see local K-9 operations up close.

A draft list worth detouring for

7456 Foothills Blvd #8, Roseville, CA
Porters House of Draft feels like the kind of place you discover once and then keep in reserve for nights when the usual options sound a little tired. The Roseville pub says it has been family-owned since 2015, and that shows up in the way the whole place feels lived in rather than overly polished.
The menu has enough personality to make a repeat visit easy. The Bacon Blue Burger, Angus French Dip, and Mei Wa Wings do a lot of the heavy lifting, and things like Brussels on Fire, Garlic Shrimp, and the Pub House Pretzel Sticks give the table a few good reasons to over-order a little.
It lands in a nice middle ground, casual enough for a weeknight and solid enough to feel like the plan.

One Lincoln shop with real charm

110 Gateway Drive, Suite 110, Lincoln, CA
La Piccolina is the sort of local shop that makes gift hunting feel a lot less routine. The Lincoln children’s boutique says owner Miranda took over the store in 2019, later moved the whole business to its current spot in one night, and now runs it next door to Brood Coffee.
The store focuses on children’s clothing, toys, books, and giftable finds, and the online shop gives a pretty clear sense of the mix, with everything from baby basics to seasonal outfits, board books, and small toy shelf picks.
It is a good reminder that Lincoln still has plenty of small places where shopping feels personal instead of transactional.
Skip the Typical Resort This Summer. Stay in a Centuries-Old Sicilian Village Instead.
Casa Gratteri offers beautifully restored homes in Gratteri, a hidden mountain town in Sicily with sweeping views, deep history, and zero crowds. Full concierge service, a private chef on request, and modern finishes throughout. This is the kind of trip people talk about for the rest of their lives.
