A 531-acre preserve opened near North Auburn
The Gist: Big Hill Preserve opened Wednesday, giving hikers, cyclists and horseback riders more than 9 miles of trails across 531 acres of protected open space. The county and Placer Land Trust finished new trails, parking for cars and horse trailers, restrooms and a viewing platform over Raccoon Creek.
Why It Matters: If you've been wanting a new spot to walk, ride a bike or bring your horse, load the address into your map app, the trailhead and trailer parking are ready for visitors now.
Rocklin's got free sand for your storm prep
The Gist: Rocklin opened a self-service sandbag station at Johnson Springview Park, 5840 5th Street, on Oct. 19. Sandbags can deflect water away from vulnerable spots when the heavy rain hits. Just know you'll need to bring your own shovels and bags.
Why It Matters: Call Public Works at 916-625-5500 to confirm hours and availability before you head over.

The birria taco on a mole tortilla
8791 Elk Grove Blvd, Elk Grove, CA 95624 |
The Dirty Diana taco is the one to hunt down at West Coast Taco Bar: slow braised birria in a red mole tortilla with melted Monterey Jack. It's that kind of menu. Korean BBQ pork comes with bulgogi marinade and daikon-carrot slaw, and the Bitchin' Cali burrito packs steak, garlic shrimp and fries. They also do catering for 40 or more. Grab the truck for an easy weeknight dinner, and don't skip Taco Tuesday.
