It is officially that time of year when the Placer County calendar starts to look like a full-time job. Between the 175th anniversary celebrations kicking off and the return of outdoor movies at Whitney Park, there is zero excuse to stay on the couch this weekend.

We are especially excited about the county’s new digital timeline; it is a pretty cool way to see how our little corner of the world evolved from the Gold Rush to the suburbs we love today. Whether you are heading out to watch the track championships or just hunting for ribs in Roseville, there is plenty of local ground to cover.

Zeus the Zebra Is Loose Again, and Lincoln Is Not Surprised

The Gist: Zeus the zebra slipped out of his enclosure again, this time spotted wandering West Wise Road north of Lincoln on Monday. Officers used portable panels to corral him, and Zeus walked himself onto a trailer without a fuss. Authorities believe weekend storm activity triggered his Friday escape, with Monday's being a follow-up adventure.

Why It Matters: Zeus is new to the area, and neighbors are still getting used to finding a zebra on their morning commute.

What's Next: Animal services confirmed Zeus's owner is legally permitted to keep him, but proper containment remains an open concern.

Placer County Turns 175 This Year

The Gist: Placer County is marking its 175th anniversary in 2026, having been established on April 25, 1851, during the height of the California Gold Rush. The county has planned a year of celebrations, including a Board of Supervisors resolution adopted in March, a digital historical timeline launched on April 1 through Engage Placer where residents can contribute family stories, a Placer County Track and Field Championship in Lincoln on April 18, and a community time capsule project running all year. The county will also serve as the presenting sponsor of the 2026 Placer County Fair in June, themed "Past, Present & Future."

Why It Matters: Placer County is home to Rocklin, Roseville, and Lincoln, and its 175-year story is, in many ways, the story of everyone who lives here. The digital timeline is a worthwhile way to spend a few minutes, and the time capsule project is a genuinely meaningful way to leave something behind for the county's next generation of residents.

Where the Ribs Are Worth the Weekday Trip

406 Vernon St, Roseville, CA

Some places earn a 4.9-star rating. Bounty Hunters Grind & Grill seems to have just made friends with nearly 500 strangers. Tucked into historic downtown Roseville and open weekdays only, this lunch spot feels less like a restaurant than a standing invitation.

Owner Verlie and son-in-law Alex greet every table personally, and the baby back ribs, slicked in house-made BBQ sauce, fall off the bone the way ribs should. The spinach and artichoke mozzarella sticks deserve their own fan club.

She Let Them In After Closing. That Says Everything.

1017 Galleria Blvd #180, Roseville, CA

Rock Hill Boutique is the kind of place you pass a dozen times before finally walking in, and then immediately regret not going sooner. Tucked into the Galleria area in Roseville, this little independently owned shop is genuinely packed, jewelry, purses, scarves, shawls, home décor, and gifts filling every corner.

The owner, Treva, is the real draw. Regulars keep coming back partly for the finds, partly for her.
